PlayStation 4 - PS4

The PlayStation 4 (officially abbreviated as PS4) is a home video game console developed by Sony that was announced in February 2013 and launched in November the same year. Being an eighth-generation console, its main competitors are Microsoft's Xbox One and Nintendo's Wii U and Switch. The PS4 is places special emphasis on social interaction as well as integration with other devices and services, even offering the ability to play games on PlayStation Vita and more using Remote Play. It also allows players to stream gameplay online or to friends' screens, allowing them to control the game remotely via Share Play. The PS4 also features a redesigned controller with improved buttons and analog sticks, along with an integrated touchpad and more. It also supports HDR10 High-dynamic-range video and playback of 4K resolution multimedia.

Though Sony focused on social aspects as a major feature of the PS4, its community creation, media sharing, live streaming, and Share Play features are optional and can be disabled. The technology in the PlayStation 4 is similar to the hardware found in modern personal computers. This familiarity is designed to make it easier and less expensive for game studios to develop games for the PS4.

The PlayStation 4's operating system is called "Orbis OS" and is based upon a customized FreeBSD 9. The console does not require an Internet connection for usage, although more functionality is available when connected. The PS4 is the first to include a WebKit-based web browser, which is a departure from its predecessor's NetFront browser. It is based on the same modern WebKit core as Google Chrome and Safari, giving it high compatibility in HTML5 compliance testing.

The console introduces a customizable menu interface, the "PlayStation Dynamic Menu," featuring a variety of color schemes. The interface displays the player's profile, recent activity, notifications, and other details in addition to unlocked trophies. It allows multiple user accounts, all with their own pass-codes. Each player account has the option to share their real name with friends, or use a nickname in other situations when anonymity is important. Facebook profiles can be connected to PlayStation Network accounts, making it easier to recognize friends. The default home screen features real time content from friends.
