About Nintendo

Nintendo - Everyone's favorite Japanese video game company

Nintendo is a multinational consumer electronics and video game company based in Kyoto, Japan. A little-known fact about Nintendo is that it was originally founded in 1889 as a Japanese playing card company and continues to sell playing cards to this day. Moreover, Nintendo was the first in the world to manufacture playing cards made of plastic. Nintendo began developing electronic toys in 1966 and got their first taste of major success with Game & Watch in 1980, a line of handheld video games. After more well-received releases in 1985 such as the Famicon Disk System and Super Mario Brothers, Nintendo grew to become an industry icon and is now one of the largest video game companies in the world.

Not only has Nintendo revolutionized the video game industry with home consoles such as the Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64 and Wii, they have also dominated the handheld game industry with portable systems like the Game Boy and Nintendo DS. In 2014, Nintendo launched the innovative concept of amiibo, physical action figures that can interact with video game software. In July 2016, investor shares in Nintendo doubled with the release of the Pokémon Go mobile app. In fact, Nintendo released a number of successful smartphone apps in collaboration with Japanese mobile game company DeNA throughout 2016 and 2017, with popular titles like Miitomo, Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.

Nintendo also re-released their NES system in the form of the NES Classic Edition, a palm-sized plug-and-play console with 30 of their most popular games pre-installed on the device. The Nintendo Switch handheld console, which was released in March 2017, broke numerous sales records in its first year. Nintendo proved the lasting power of its core franchises, with both The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey debuting on the Switch to rave reviews. Early in 2018, Nintendo announced that the Switch had become the fastest-selling console in U.S. history and beat out all other rival consoles as the top-selling console in the U.S. in December 2017. In Japan, its sales figures increased steadily throughout 2017 and global sales surpassed 10 million units in its first nine months.

One of Nintendo's defining brand characteristics is the exceptional durability of their products. Some 20-year-old consoles are known to operate just as well as the day they were released! Nintendo caters to a wide range of customers, from casual users who might enjoy games like Brain Age or Wii Sports, to fandom gamers who are devoted to ongoing series like Super Mario Brothers and The Legend of Zelda. Even people who wouldn't consider themselves game-lovers seem to gravitate towards Nintendo's charming creations. Iconic Nintendo characters like Mario and Kirby have adoring fans all over the world.
