About Super Famicom
Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) - Now you're playing with super power
The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (officially abbreviated as Super NES or SNES and colloquially shortened to Super Nintendo) is a 16-bit home video game console developed by Nintendo that was originally released in Japan in 1990. The SNES is Nintendo's second home console, successor to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Compared to other consoles of its time, the SNES had advanced graphics and sound quality. The integration of a variety of enhancement chips into its game cartridges also boosted the SNES's competitiveness in the marketplace. The SNES was a global success, becoming the best-selling console of the 16-bit era, despite its relatively late start and the intense competition it faced in North America and Europe from Sega's Genesis console. The SNES remained popular well into the 32-bit era and continues to be a favorite among collectors and retro gamers.

Nintendo and Sega had an ongoing rivalry that has been described as one of the most notable console wars in video game history. Sega often positioned the Genesis as the ""cool"console, aiming games at older audiences and airing edgy advertisements that occasionally mocked its competition. However, the tides turned when Nintendo secured the first console conversion of Capcom's arcade classic Street Fighter II for SNES. The game didn't make the transition to the Genesis until over a year later. Despite the its head start, much larger library of games, and lower price point, the Genesis only represented an estimated 60% of the American 16-bit console market in June 1992. Neither console could maintain a definitive lead for several years.
One of the most hotly debated SNES topics is the difference in design between the North American version and the original Japanese model which was sold in other countries, such as the UK and Australia. The original version has a slimmer, more rounded design accented by blue, red, green, and yellow controller buttons. For the North American SNES, the console takes on a slightly blockier shape with light and dark purple accents and buttons.
In late 2017, Nintendo re-released a mini version of the retro console, including two controllers and over 20 pre-installed games, called the SNES Classic Edition. By the end of the year, sales surpassed four million. This is especially impressive considering that the company also managed to sell more than 13 million units of the Nintendo Switch since its launch in early 2017. Nintendo resumed production of the SNES Classic in 2018, allowing fans to continue enjoying the nostalgia of their favorite games.
