About Nintendo Switch

Nintendo Switch - Switch and Play

The Nintendo Switch is a hybrid video game console developed by Nintendo, that can be used as both a home and handheld console, released in March 2017. The Nintendo Switch consists of a console unit, a dock, and two Joy-Con controllers. When used in the handheld mode, the Nintendo Switch is operated similarly to a tablet computer with its LCD touchscreen. The Nintendo Switch has enjoyed huge success compared to its predecessor, the Nintendo Wii U, shipping 3 million units in the first month of its launch. As of December 2018, the Nintendo Switch has sold more than 32 million units worldwide, its success partly tied to the sales of Nintendo first-party titles such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, and Pokemon: Let's Go.

After suffering their first loss as a video game company with the disappointing performance of the Wii U, Nintendo had to go back to the drawing board while they were developing the Nintendo Switch. While Nintendo intended to create a console that was not simply a successor to the Wii, the Nintendo Switch's Joy-Con controllers were heavily influenced by the Wii Remote. The Nintendo Switch was officially released on March 3 2017, the set coming with a Nintendo Switch console, a dock, two Joy-Con controllers with straps, a Joy-Con Grip, an AC power adapter and an HDMI cable.

In March 2019, two years after the initial launch of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo announced that two new consoles in the Nintendo Switch family would be released later that year, inspired by the 3DS' split evolution. The upcoming models are said to be a budget version of the existing console and an enhanced version of the Nintendo Switch aimed at hardcore videogamers.

As of February 2019, there are more than 1,800 games available to play on the console, with the Nintendo Switch system supporting both physical and digital versions of games. Digital games can be purchased through the Nintendo eShop. Some of the highest selling Nintendo Switch games include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Pokemon Let's Go, Splatoon 2, Kirby Star Allies, and Super Mario Party.
