About Wii

Nintendo Wii - Oui, We, Wii

The Wii is a home video game console released by Nintendo in November 2006. At the time of its launch, the Wii's innovative concept caused it to stand out from its major competitors, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. In fact, the console was known by the code name "Revolution" until April 2006. The Wii introduced the Wii Remote controller, which uses gesture recognition and pointing through the use of sensor technology to let players interact with and manipulate items on screen. The Wii has more worldwide sales than any other seventh-generation consoles, which is often attributed to Nintendo's decision to target a broader demographic. In December 2009, the console broke the U.S. record for most sales in a single month.

Nintendo's spelling of Wii (specifically the decision to include two consecutive lowercase "i" characters) is intended to resemble two people standing side-by-side, which conveys the feeling of players gathering together. This spelling choice also represents the Wii Remote and Nunchuck. Nintendo proudly states, "Wii sounds like 'we,' which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion." They've also addressed critics who preferred the working title, saying "Revolution as a name is not ideal; it's long, and in some cultures, it's hard to pronounce. So we wanted something that was short, to the point, easy to pronounce, and distinctive. That's how "Wii," as a console name, was created."

Wii's innovative motion-sensing Wii Remote controller (known colloquially as the Wiimote) is the console's defining feature. When you swing and tilt the Wii Remote in real life, your physical movements are mirrored within the game providing an intuitive, interactive, intriguing gaming experience that players of any age can enjoy. The Wii Remote controller can connect to extra attachments, its main companion being the Nunchuck which complements the Wii Remote by providing functions similar to those in gamepad controllers. Other attachments include the Classic Controller, Wii Zapper and the Wii Wheel, originally used for the Mario Kart Wii racing video game.

Speaking of Mario Kart Wii, it is the second highest-selling Wii title in history with over 35 million copies sold as of 2017. Moreover, the almost decade-old game is one of Amazon's top 100 best-selling video games in the US for 2018. The highest-selling Wii game is Wii Sports, which was released in 2006. Therefore, it's no surprise that the Wii's number three best-selling title is 2009's Wii Sports Resort. Other popular Wii games include Wii Play, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Fit, Wii Fit Plus, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Each of these titles boasts over 10 million sales worldwide. The Wii will always be known as a game-changing (no pun intended) console that the whole family loves to play together.
