About Nintendo DS

Nintendo DS - dual-screen technology in your pocket!

The Nintendo DS, or DS, is a dual-screen handheld game console developed by Nintendo and released in 2004. The DS is short for "dual screen" or "developers' system" and introduced two LCD screens working in tandem, touchscreen technology, built-in microphone and support with wireless connectivity to handheld gaming. It was the first console released in the Nintendo DS family alongside its three redesigns, the Nintendo DS Lite, the Nintendo DSi and the Nintendo DSi XL. The mass appeal of the Nintendo DS allowed it to become Nintendo's best selling console of all time.

Several ground-breaking technologies in handheld gaming were introduced with the Nintendo DS, including its dual screens, touchscreen, built-in mic with voice recognition and wireless connectivity. The Nintendo DS's classic clamshell design resembles the Game Boy Advance SP and few aesthetic changes were made when producing its successor, the Nintendo 3DS. Alongside its classic design, the Nintendo DS's backward compatibility with Game Boy Advance software allowed it to surpass its initial status as an experimental ""third pillar"in Nintendo's console lineup (alongside the Game Boy Advance and GameCube) to ultimately become Nintendo's signature handheld console.

Two years after its initial release in 2004, Nintendo launched the Nintendo DS Lite, a slimmer and lighter redesign of the original Nintendo DS with brighter screens. The third and final redesign came in 2008, with the Nintendo DSi, another redesign of the original console with several improvements and the notable addition of inner and outer 0.3-megapixel digital cameras.

The Nintendo DS family's popularity is unprecedented, with over 154 million units sold worldwide, making it the best-selling handheld console of all time and the second best-selling console overall behind the PlayStation 2. In its lifetime, the Nintendo DS family of consoles enjoyed popularity with a wide range of players, including with consumers like the elderly. Some of the most popular titles on the Nintendo DS were New Super Mario Bros., Nintendogs, Mario Kart DS, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, Animal Crossing: Wild World and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
