The story of Kamen Rider Build starts 10 years ago when the "Pandora Box" was found on Mars. The box created barriers that divided Japan into three areas (Touto, Hokuto, and Seito) and brought along the Smash, mysterious lifeforms that attack humans. Sento Kiryu, a young but talented physicist working for the government-run Touto Institute of Advanced Matter Physics secretly transforms into Kamen Rider Build in order to defeat the Smash and the evil organization Faust. Kamen Rider Build is the last installment in the Heisei period run of the tokusatsu series and is the first to take place in an alternative universe.

Sento Kiryu is aided by cafe owner Soichi Isurugi and his daughter Misora, who can purify the elements left behind by the Smash. Sento also becomes close friends with Ryuga Banjo, a framed fugitive who escaped from Faust. After spending time training with Sento, Ryuga eventually gains the ability to transform in Kamen Rider Cross-Z.

Kamen Rider Build's main theme is science and technology, with protagonist Sento Kiryu using his scientific prowess to enhance his powers as Kamen Rider Build. Kamen Rider Build takes the scientific aspect of the plot very seriously, with several professors from Keio University, Kyushu University and Kyoto University working as consultants for the show.
