About Okurikara

Touken Ranbu Ookurikara - Touken Ranbu's resident bad boy

Ookurikara is a character that appears in Touken Ranbu (which can be translated into English as "Wild Dance of Swords"), a free-to-play collectible card browser video game developed by DMM Games and Nitroplus. Released in 2015, it quickly became popular and has been adapted into three anime series, multiple stage plays, and a live-action film. Players assume the role of a sage who travels into the past to defeat evil spirits with their ability to animate legendary swords which appear in the game as attractive young men. Touken Ranbu is often seen as a gender-swapped clone of Kantai Collection, also published by DMM. Ookurikara is a tachi sword crafted during the Muromachi period of medieval Japan.

Ookurikara is a tachi sword (a sword used by the Samurai class in feudal Japan) crafted by an expert swordsmith in 1350 CE, Hikoshiro Hiromitsu of Aishuu. According to Tokugawa records, Ookurikara was given as a gift to Tadamune Date by the shogun Hidetada Tokugawa. The sword was a reward for completing the construction of a protective stone wall surrounding Edo Castle. Ookurikara remained in the Date family's possession until 2016 and is now in a private collection.

In both his videogame and anime appearances, Ookurikara is known for his loner nature and somewhat aggressive attitude. Due to his long history with the Date household, he is old friends with Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, Tsurumaru Kuninaga and Taikogane who are three other swords that belonged to the Date family. The four are collectively known as "Dategumi" by the Touken Ranbu fandom. Ookurikara always wears a necklace with the Sanskrit character "kan" inscribed on it. The distinctive dragon design on the sword's blade is reflected in Ookurikara's design with his dragon tattoo on his arm.

Appearing in the Touken Ranbu anime adaptation Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, he is a firm fan favorite due to his cool design and aloof personality. He is voiced by Makoto Furukawa in the anime adaptation. Ookurikara is also affectionately referred to as "Kara-chan" by Tsumaru Kuninaga in the anime. Although Ookurikara is a tachi sword, he was reclassed as an uchigatana in the game in 2015.
