About Sailor Venus

Sailor Venus - The original Sailor Soldier

Sailor Venus is a fictional character within the Sailor Moon franchise, expanded from the original eponymous manga series by Naoko Takeuchi. She is the superhero identity of Minako Aino (renamed Mina in some English adaptations), a teenage Japanese schoolgirl who is part of the Sailor Soldiers, female supernatural fighters who protect the Solar System from evil. While Sailor Venus is the fifth and last of the Inner Senshi to join the group, she was the first guardian to have her powers awakened. Fighting crime as Sailor V, she was popular before the others even realized they were Sailor Soldiers. Moreover, Sailor Moon herself was one of Sailor V's biggest fans.

In Japanese, the name for the planet Venus is "Kinsei," with its first kanji meaning gold and the second indicating a celestial object. Because of this association, many of Sailor Venus's attacks use weapons, such as chains and compacts, made of gold. This is perhaps why the color of her uniform is a golden orange color. As almost all of her weapons and attacks are heart-themed and include the word "love" in their names, it's clear that her powers also reference Venus from Roman mythology, the goddess of love.

Many fans have noticed that Sailor Venus and Sailor Moon both have long blonde hair with bangs and blue eyes, which makes them visually distinguishable only by their different hairstyles and clothing. Takeuchi herself has stated that the reason Sailor Venus looks so much like Sailor Moon is so that she has the ability to impersonate the Moon princess in order to protect her from danger, should the need ever arise. Another parallel that connects her to Sailor Moon and sets her apart from the other Sailor Soldiers is her own feline companion, Artemis the white cat.

Minako was actually first introduced as the protagonist of Naoko Takeuchi's much-shorter manga series, Codename: Sailor V, which is the prequel to Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon. In it (and the beginning of Sailor Moon), she goes by the pseudonym Sailor V and is given a personal backstory. The plot lines of Sailor V are generally compatible with the latter series, but are usually considered separate. In the manga and anime series, she dreams of becoming a famous idol, but in the live-action series, her character is already a well-known celebrity. She also co-starred with Rei Hino (Sailor Mars) in a special short story titled Rei and Minako's Girls School Battle.
