About Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Gundam - The genre-defining mecha anime
Mobile Suit Gundam (also known as First Gundam, Gundam 0079 or simply Gundam '79) is a Japanese robot anime series, produced by Yoshiyuki Tomino and animated by Sunrise. The show originally aired on Nagoya Broadcasting Network in 1979 and subsequently inspired numerous sequals and spin-offs, creating the Gundam universe. In 1981, the series was re-edited and split into three movies for theatrical release. Tomino himself wrote a trilogy of novels that retells the events of the series. Two manga adaptations of the series have also been written.

Mobile Suit Gundam's story is set in a fictional universe in the year 2124 (Universal Century year 0079, according to the Gundam Calendar). Its plot focuses on a war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation, with the latter unveiling a new giant robot known as the RX-78-2 Gundam, piloted by a teenage civilian mechanic named Amuro Ray. The Gundam series has defined the mecha anime genre and developed into a science fiction media franchise that includes anime, OVAs, films, manga, novels and video games.
To commemorate Mobile Suit Gudam's 30th anniversary, a life-sized 18-meter tall RX-78-2 Gundam statue was built in Odaiba, Tokyo. The tribute statue attracted an astounding 4.15 million visitors during the first time it was open to the public, from July 11 to August 31, 2009. Another tribute was constructed in in September 2017 the form of the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam, which was 6 meters taller than its RX-78-2 predecessor! Sunrise is expected to announce new and exciting projects in 2019 for Gundam's 40th anniversary.
After the show's cancellation in 1980, Bandai began producing DIY Gundam model kits called Gunpla. Nearly every mecha in the series was made into a model kit, from mobile suits to support aircraft and space battleships. In 1990, Bandai introduced the High Grade (HG) line, which featured newer 1/144 scale versions of the RX-78-2 Gundam, the RX-178 Gundam Mk. II, the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam and the MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam. In 1995, the 1/100 scale Master Grade (MG) line was introduced. This line features more parts, better detail and improved articulation compared to past kits of the same scale. Following the release of the Perfect Grade Evangelion, Bandai introduced the 1/60 scale Perfect Grade (PG) line to the Gundam series in 1998. This line features extensive detail and articulation, as well as working skeletal systems and light-up features. The PG line is the most expensive among all Gunpla kits and only a select few mobile suits have been released in this line. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the franchise in 1999, Bandai released 1/144 scale First Grade (FG) kits of mobile suits from the original series. Marketed as budget models, these snap-fit kits combined the simplicity of the original kits with more modern designs based upon the corresponding Perfect Grade kits. To commemorate the 30th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam, Bandai released the MG RX-78-2 Gundam version 2.0 in 2015.
