Mobile Suit Gundam (also known as First Gundam, Gundam 0079, or Gundam '79) is a Japanese science-fiction robot anime series, produced and animated by Sunrise. It premiered in Japan on Nagoya Broadcasting Network and its affiliated ANN stations on April 1979 and aired until January 1980, spanning 43 episodes. It was the very first Gundam series, which has subsequently become a global franchise with numerous sequels and spinoffs. Set in the futuristic calendar year Universal Century 0079, the plot focuses on the war between the Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation, with the latter unveiling a new giant robot known as the RX-78-2 Gundam piloted by the teenage civilian mechanic Amuro Ray. The series is famous for revolutionizing the giant robot genre due to the handling of mobile suits as weapons of war as well as the portrayal of their pilots as ordinary soldiers, as opposed to the previous style of portraying hero pilots and their giant super hero robots.

Amuro Ray
15-year-old Side 7 native Amuro Ray is the main protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam. He is the benchmark of all Gundam pilots that came after him, famously known for piloting the powerful RX-78-2 Gundam during the Universal Century's One Year War.
Char Aznable
Char Aznable is one of Mobile Suit Gundam's antagonists. Char's personality is a mix of passion, charisma, pride, vengefulness, and charm. Throughout his life, he was also known by the aliases Édouard Mass and Quattro Bajeena. In addition, he is given the nom de guerre of "The Red Comet," for his performance at the Battle of Loum during the One Year War.
RX-78-2 Gundam
The RX-78-2 Gundam (also known as "the" Gundam or White Mobile Suit) is Mobile Suit Gundam's titular mobile suit. The unit was primarily piloted by the series' main protagonist Amuro Ray in defense of the Earth Federation during the One Year War against the Principality of Zeon.
MS-06S Zaku II (Char Aznable Custom Zaku)
Very similar to the standard MS-06F Zaku II, the MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type is a Principality of Zeon Mobile Suit that, as an S-type Zaku, has greater thrust, acceleration, and speed than a standard Zaku II.
Mobile Suit Gundam's story begins with a newly deployed Federation warship, the White Base, arriving at the secret research base located at the Side 7 colony to pick up the Federation's newest weapon. However, they are closely followed by Zeon forces. A Zeon reconnaissance team member disobeys mission orders and attacks the colony, killing most of the Federation crew and civilians in the process. Out of desperation, civilian Amuro Ray accidentally finds the Federation's new prototype arsenal, the RX-78 Gundam, and neutralizes the situation. As quickly as possible, the White Base sets out with her newly formed crew of civilian recruits and refugees in her journey to survive.
