Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (often abbreviated to Gundam SEED) is the ninth installment in the Gundam franchise, a long-running science fiction multi-media mecha franchise produced by the animation studio Sunrise. Mobile Suit Gundam 00 was the first Gundam anime to be produced in the 21st century with the episodes airing in Japan from 2002 to 2003. Gundam SEED is set in a futuristic era called the Cosmic Era where mankind has split off into two races. Directed by Mitsuo Fukuda and written by Chiaki Morosawa, Gundam SEED saw great success in its 50 episode run and helped create a new wave of Gundam fans.

Kira Yamato
Kira Yamato is the main protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED who pilots the GAT-X105 Strike, the ZGMF-X10A Freedom, and the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom. Kira is one of the most well-known and recognizable characters from the entire Gundam franchise.

Athrun Zala

Mobile Suit Gundam is set in the "Cosmic Era," where mankind is separated into two different sets of humans: the "Naturals," regular Earth-dwelling humans and the "Coordinators," a race of genetically altered super-humans. The plot of Gundam SEED revolves around a young Coordinator, Kira Yamato, who is pulled into a war between the two races after the Coordinators attack a space colony. Before the anime's release, Gundam was often thought as a franchise for men, but Gundam SEED proved to be a huge success with female fans. Gundam SEED has become one of the most popular Gundam series in Japan, having record numbers of viewers of the televised series and over 10 million Gundam SEED figures by 2004. In 2011, to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the series' original broadcast, a special edition HD remaster of the series was streamed on the Bandai Channel website.
