Macross Delta is set in the year 2067, eight years after the events of Macross Frontier. The story takes place in the fictional Brisingr Globular Cluster of the Milky Way Galaxy, where a mysterious phenomenon known as the Vár Syndrome has taken over, causing people to go berserk with no apparent cause. In order to defeat this mysterious virus, the idol group Walküre are put together by an interstellar military group known as Chaos. Walküre are protected by Delta Flight, a team of talented Valkyrie pilots whose sole goal is to project the Walküre from being infected by the Vár Syndrome.

Walküre's idols' power lies in their singing, which contains powerful waves that help calm those who have been infected with the Vár Syndrome. The five-member sonic unit is comprised of the idols Mikumo Guynemar, Kaname Buccaneer, Makina Nakajima, and Reina Prowler. Both Walküre and Delta Flight come into conflict with a group known as the Aerial Knights of the Windermere Kingdom, who exploit the virus as a means to continue the war against the New United Government in order to gain control of the Brisingr Globular Cluster.

Studio Nue implemented a creative audition process in order to recruit the vocal talent for the five members of Walküre. The auditions were held at Joysound's karaoke boxes across Japan where applicants were required to sing their favorite Macross song and record themselves singing. The auditioners could either be a professional or amateur singer, with the sole condition that the performer currently had no contract with any record label. The audition process received over 8000 applicants and created a huge buzz around Macross Delta before it was released.
