Macross Frontier is set in 2059, 47 years after the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross series and 19 years after Macross Plus. As the series begins, a mission to an unexplored asteroid belt goes awry, and the New United Nations Spacy (N.U.N.S.) is destroyed by a powerful insectoid biomechanical alien mecha known as the Vajra. In order to defeat this new threat to the galaxy, the N.U.N.S. Colonial Defense Forces deploy the help a new private military organization known as the Strategic Military Service (S.M.S.), which utilize the VF-25 Messiah fighter.

Macross Frontier revolves around the three main characters Alto Saotome, Sheryl Nome, and Ranka Lee. The three form a love triangle, with Sheryl and Ranka fighting for the affections of Alto. The series features the 25th New Macross-class Colonial Fleet, known as the Macross Frontier, which is making its way to the galactic center. This heavily populated fleet contains both human and Zentradi (humanoid aliens from the Macross universe) occupants.

Ranka's design was based on Japanese idols from the 80s, while Sheryl was meant to emulate the more western-influenced aesthetics that can be seen in Japanese pop today. Macross Frontier was incredibly successful in Japan, but also in the west where it introduced many new anime fans to the Macross universe. Three separate manga adaptations have been running in Shonen Ace and Comp Ace since February 2008. Macross Frontier also enjoyed two movie adaptations: Macross Frontier Movie: The False Songstress and Macross Frontier Movie: The Wings of Goodbye.
