About Macross

Super Dimension Fortress Macross - the original space opera

Super Dimension Fortress Macross, often simply referred to as Macross, is a TV anime series produced by Studio Nue in the long-running multi-media science-fiction franchise, Macross. The series ran from October 1982 to June 1983 and was written by Kenichi Matsuzaki. It launched the Macross series and Super Dimension Trilogy, which are considered masterpieces in the genre of mecha. The series centers around the conflict between the human race and an alien species known as the Zentradi.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross is set in 2009, where 10 years earlier, a colossal alien spacecraft lands on Earth. The spacecraft is reverse-engineered by the military organization, the U.N. Spacy and is rebuilt as the SDF-1 Macross. At the ceremony of the Macross' launch, the Zentradi, a race of humanoid aliens attack the site. A young civilian pilot, Hikaru Ichiyo, takes the new VF-1 Valkyrie to help try and defeat this new threat to Earth.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross also set many tropes that would become common throughout the Macross series. One example is the prominence of music idols and their romantic involvements with the main character. Variable fighters were also introduced in this series, the first being the VF-1 Valkyrie, which later became the generic name for these types of spacecraft in the rest of the Macross franchise.

The series was originally proposed in 1980 and was greatly inspired by another mecha classic, Mobile Suit Gundam. The chief director of the series was the highly experienced Noboru Ishiguro, who had directed Space Battleship Yamato, one of the most iconic mecha anime of that era. The series' original run was only meant to be 26 episodes long, but due to its immense popularity, MBS commissioned 12 more episodes to be broadcast.
