Hanamaru Kunikida is one of the main characters of Love Live Sunshine (stylized as Love Live! Sunshine!!), a Japanese multimedia project co-developed by ASCII Media Works's Dengeki G's Magazine, music label Lantis and animation studio Sunrise. The series is a spinoff from Love Live and revolves around a group of nine schoolgirl friends who create the idol group known as Aqours in order to save their school from shutting down. Love Live Sunshine launched in August 2015 with music CDs and accompanying anime music videos. Hanamaru Kunikida is a first-year student at Uranohoshi Girls' High School and one of the nine members of Aqours. She is also a member of the Aqours' sub-unit AZALEA.

Hanamaru Kunikida is a first-year student at Uronohoshi Girls' High School and the best friend of fellow Aqours member Ruby Kurosawa. She and Ruby are approached by Chika Takami to join the school idol club, but Hanamaru turns down the invitation due to her lack of confidence. Hanamaru was actually interested in the idea of school idols, being a fan of Rin Hoshizora from μ's. However Ruby joins Aqours, Hanamaru quickly follows suit.
Hanamaru was raised at her family's temple and spends much of her time reading alone. Due to her upbringing as a temple girl, Hanamaru is inexperienced with technology and does not watch television or use the internet. As a result, Hanamaru is fascinated by modern technology. Hanamaru also has a unique verbal tic and dialect, ending her sentences with "zura". Hanamaru is playful and mischievous and is shown to have a huge appetite.
Outside her idol and temple girl duties, Hanamaru enjoys Japanese literature, spending much of her time in the school library which she often helps out at. Her dream is to one day become a famous writer. Hanamaru is a talented singer, which has earned her a spot in a choir. Hanamaru is a member of AZALEA, a sub-unit of Aqours. Hanamaru is voiced by Kanako Takatsuki in both the anime and game versions of Love Live Sunshine.
