About Tooru Oikawa

Haikyuu!! Toru Oikawa - The Grand King of Aobajosai High

Toru Oikawa is a character from Haikyuu (stylized as Haikyuu!!), a Japanese shonen manga series about male high school volleyball players. He is a third-year student at Aobajosai High and captain of the school's volleyball team. He is also widely regarded as the ace setter. Several girls follow him around school because he is so attractive and often flirtatiously smiles and winks. Despite his playfulness, Toru is an excellent and well-rounded volleyball player who takes the sport extremely seriously. Many other players describe his personality as "disgusting," because he often conveys a cocky yet careless persona on the court. As a manipulation tactic, he makes cheerful comments that are then immediately contrasted by more serious or intimidating remarks. His height is just over six feet and, due to a previous injury, he always wears a white brace on his right knee when he plays. Toru is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa.

Haikyuu, written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate, has expanded into a franchise that offers a variety of mixed media including anime, compilation films, video games and a radio drama. The name Haikyuu is derived from the pronunciation of the kanji for "volleyball," because the story chronicles the lives of junior high schoolers who passionately play the sport in hopes of becoming champions. Individual chapters of Haikyuu have been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since February 2012, with standalone volumes published by Shueisha. The series was initially published as a one-shot in Shueisha's seasonal Jump Next magazine prior to serialization.

Because Toru is extremely intelligent and cunning, he is able to figure out both his teammates and opponents' weaknesses with ease. However, he is threatened by the intelligence of another player, Tobio Kageyama. Toru disrespectfully calls him Tobio-chan in an attempt to belittle others' respect for the young genius. Because of this feud, Tobio naturally brings out the more rash and childish side of Toru's personality. To compensate for his feelings of inferiority to players like Tobio and Wakatoshi Ushijima, Toru makes sure to put in an above-average amount of effort and push himself to his limit. This has, at times, led to injuries like the one on his knee. He is most feared for his powerful and accurate jump serve, which he has honed and perfected from a young age. He can maintain a calm and cool composure during any match, no matter how tense it is. Despite not being considered a genius, Toru is an impressive athlete and one of the best all-around volleyball players in the prefecture.
