Koushi Suguwara is a third-year student at Karasuno High School in Miyagi Prefecture, the sporting rival school to Nekoma High. Suguwara has a gentle and soothing personality and acts as the moral support for his teammates. Despite being a talented setter, Suguwara tends to stay on the sidelines of matches and encourages his teammates to never give up, no matter what the situation.

Although Suguwara is a nurturing "senpai" as Vice Coach of the volleyball team, he has a mischievous and arrogant side to him too. Suguwara tends to get a little rough when he teases his teammates, often smacking them when he is excited about joining in with the game. Suguwara is also very perceptive and pays close attention to the way the opposing team plays in order to give his teammates hints on how to take down the other team.

Suguwara has been a member of the volleyball club at Karasuno High since his first year alongside his friends Asashi Azumane and Daichi Sawamura. Suguwara has always played as the setter, but in his third year, he took the position of starting setter. As he rarely plays in official matches, Karasuno High's rival teams find him to be a tricky opponent. Suguwara is particularly skilled in executing the team's synchronized attacks.
