Sougo Okita is the 1st Division Captain of the Shinsengumi and a former trainee under Commander Isao Kondo's dojo. It was at Kondo's dojo where Sougo first met Toshiro Hijikata, who would become the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi. Sougo grew jealous of Hijikata and Kondo's relationship; the grudge fueling his goal to assume Hijikata's role as vice-commander of the Shinsengumi.

Despite Sougo's rather angelic appearance, he is extremely sadistic in nature, to the extent that Hijikata refers to him as the "King of the Planet of the Sadists" early on in the Gintama anime. Despite being a sadist, he is extremely submissive to his older sister, Mitsuba Okita, whom he idolizes. Despite his somewhat evil exterior, he does show genuine affection for those his loves and respects, such as his sister and Isao Kondo. Sougo is quite close to Gintoki, as they share a common love of torturing and humiliating Hijikata.

Gintama creator Hideaki Sorachi originally intended for Sougo to be a female character, wielding an umbrella as a weapon. His name is based on Soji Okita, a historical figure who was the real-life captain of the Shinsengumi's first unit.
