Haruka Nanase is the main character from Free and the vice-president of Iwatobi High School Swim Club. Haruka's swimming career started while in elementary school where his best friend Makoto Tachibana convinces him to join the swimming club. This is where Haruka discovered his passion for swimming, which continued into his middle school and high school days. However, while in middle school, after fellow swim team member Asahi Shiina moves away, Haruka temporarily quits swimming until he joins Iwatobi High School Swim Club.

Haruka is a quiet and determined young boy who has a strong affinity for water. Despite his cool exterior, Haruka is incredibly caring towards his friends, particularly those on his high school swim team: Makoto Tachibana, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rei Ryugazaki. Haruka also shares a fierce, but the good-spirited rivalry with childhood friend Rin Matsuoka, who swims for Samezuka Academy's swim team. Haruka dislikes his feminine name, so asks to be called "Haru" by his closest friends.

Haruka is born on June 30th and shares a birthday with real-life Olympic swimming champion, Michael Phelps. His motif animal is a dolphin and he is often shown with the animal in official merchandise and promotional images. Haruka has a fixation with water that is the source of comic relief throughout the series.
