Rei Ryugazaki is a character from Free (stylized as Free!), a Japanese anime television series based on the light novel High☆Speed and produced by Kyoto Animation with Animation Do. The first series of the anime began airing in 2013, with the second season "Free! - Eternal Summer" and third season "Free! - Dive to the Future" being released in 2014 and 2018 respectively. Free has enjoyed huge success since its debut, spawning films, an internet radio show, and drama CDs. Rei is one of the main characters of the series whose specialty is the butterfly.

Rei Ryugasaki is a third-year student at Iwatobi High School who swims butterfly on the Iwatobi High School swim team. Originally Rei was a member of the track team of Iwatobi High school before he joined the swim club. After Haru and Makoto graduated, he took the role of the swim club's captain. Rei is the model student, hardworking and always achieving top grades.
Rei was constantly hounded by his classmate Nagisa Hazuki to join the swim team, who initially resisted until he saw Haruka Nanase swim beautifully. Rei is considered good-looking and intelligent and has a penchant for beautiful things. Rei usually approaches all aspects of his life with great rigidity, but eventually realizes with the help of his friends that you need to be "free" in order to become a great swimmer.
Rei was born on December 14th, making him a Sagittarius. His motif animal is a butterfly and he is often shown with the insect in official merchandise and promotional images. Rei is voiced by Daisuke Hirakawa in the anime, with J. Michael Tatum serving as his voice in the English dub of Free.
