About Fate Series

Fate - Would you risk your life for the Holy Grail?

Fate is a media franchise developed by Type-Moon that originated with the release of a PC-based adult visual novel called Fate/stay night in January 2004. A version of Fate/stay night rated for ages 15 and up titled Fate/stay night Realta Nua (Irish for "new stars") was released for the PlayStation 2 and later for download on Windows, as a trilogy covering the three main story lines. The Fate series follows various battles called Holy Grail Wars that involve Masters, Servants, and Heroic Spirits. Since Fate/stay night, the franchise has produced many prequels, sequels, spin-offs, and adaptations under the Fate umbrella in the forms of visual novels, manga, anime, light novels, video games, and more. The most notable is turn-based tactical RPG Fate/Grand Order, which became the sixth highest-grossing mobile game in 2017, only two years after its release.

After a mysterious inferno kills his family, Fate/stay night protagonist Shiro is saved and adopted by Kiritsugu Emiya, who teaches him the ways of magic and justice. One night, years after Kiritsugu's death, Shiro is cleaning at school when he finds himself caught in the middle of a deadly encounter between two superhumans known as Servants. Just as he attempts to escape, Shiro is caught by one of the Servants and is dealt a life-threatening injury. He miraculously survives, but the same Servant returns to finish the deed. In desperation, Shiro summons a Servant of his own, a knight named Saber, to protect him. The two are consequently forced to participate in the Fifth Holy Grail War, a battle royale of seven Servants and the mages who summoned them, in hopes of winning the omnipotent Holy Grail itself. Fate/stay night follows Shiro on his journey to understanding the fine line between a hero and a murderer as he struggles to reconcile his ethics with the harsh reality he faces.

Fate/stay night begins around the same time as the ending of Tsukihime, another visual novel by Type-Moon. Fate/stay night's Fuyuki City is the setting for a secret and violent war among competing magi. For the past two centuries, seven magi gathered to risk their lives in a battle for the Holy Grail, a legendary wish-granting chalice. The past four Holy Grail Wars have typically occurred every sixty years, but the fifth war that Fate/stay night chronicles has started eerily prematurely, only ten years after the fourth war.

Fate/stay night and Fate/hollow ataraxia take place in the same universe. The prequel work Fate/Zero tells the story of the Fourth Holy Grail War 10 years prior to Fate/stay night and seems to take place in a very similar parallel world, due to various differences in minor details and events. Fate/stay night spin-off Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya (stylized as PRISMA☆ILLYA) features characters from Fate/stay night, Fate/hollow ataraxia and Fate/Zero, and is set in a parallel world where the Fourth Holy Grail War never took place. Fate/Extra, its sequel Fate/Extra CCC, Fate/Extella, and the unrelated Fate/Apocrypha take place in similar universes that diverged from that of Fate/stay night at different plot points.
