About Saber

Fate Saber - the Fate Series' Knight in Shining Armor

Saber, whose real name is Altria Pendragon (sometimes localized as Artoria Pendragon) is a character from the Fate Series. She first appeared in the 2004 Japanese visual novel Fate/stay night by Type-Moon, but is also known for her appearances in the light novel Fate/Zero and mobile game Fate/Grand Order. She is of the Saber class, serving as a Servant for Kiritsugu Emiya, Shirou Emiya, and Ritsuka Fujimaru. Saber is based on the mythological King Arthur of Great Britain, who wields his legendary swords, Caliburn, Excalibur, and Avalon. Saber is the most recognizable character from the whole of the Fate Series and often appears center-stage across promotional materials for the franchise. In all her appearances, she has been voiced by Ayako Kawasumi.

As with her name, Saber's backstory is heavily influenced by the medieval legends of King Arthur. At her birth, her father Uther Pendragon, chooses to keep her birth and gender a secret, fearing that his subjects would not accept a woman as their future ruler. Saber was then entrusted by the wizard Merlin to the knight Sir Ector, who raises her as a son. When Saber is a teenager, her father King Uther dies, leaving no known legitimate heirs to the throne and Britain enters a period of chaos, with the threat of a Saxon invasion looming in the background. Merlin returns to Saber shortly after her father dies, explaining her true heritage and that if she draws Caliburn from its stone, the British people will accept her as their true monarch. Saber draws Caliburn from the stone and assumes her role as the ruler of Britain.

Saber is a serious and strong-willed young woman who always speaks her mind. She has a strong moral code, and actively ignores advice that suggests she use underhand and deceitful tactics to win in battle. This dedication to her honor leads to many conflicts with Kiritsugu over strategy during the Fourth Holy Grail War. Saber is also seen as cold, calculating, and emotionless by many of her peers, but this is a front she puts on to show her people that she is worthy of ruling her country. While Saber is incredibly skilled in sword-to-sword combat, her real talents lie in her ability to manipulate her enormous magical energy. She wears armor that has magical energy woven into it and cannot be permanently damaged no matter how much it is chipped, slashed, or smashed.

Saber is the most popular character from Type-Moon's entire canon, consistently ranking as number one in popularity polls of the series. The Japanese figure giant Good Smile Company also held a poll in which they asked fans which figures they wanted most. Two versions of Saber were made, her regular look and her Lily form from Unlimited Codes.
