About Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters

Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters - Digital monsters team up and battle to save their AI world

Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters is a Japanese multimedia project created by Toei Company, Dentsu, and Bandai Namco Holdings, under the pseudonym Akiyoshi Hongo. It is the eighth official installment of the Digimon franchise, but also considered its own separate franchise from the original. An on-screen adaptation of the franchise was animated by Toei, produced by Dentsu, directed by Go Koga and written by Yoichi Kato (of Mushibugyo and Yo-kai Watch) with character designs by Kenichi Onuki (of Gundam Build Fighters). The series' theme revolves around the dangers of technology when used unwisely, particularly in regard to the technological singularity and artificial intelligence.

In the year 2045, technology has evolved to include artificial intelligence called Appmons (an abbreviation of Appli Monsters), which are sentient creatures that exist within the world of mobile apps. The main character of Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters is Haru Shinkai, a junior high school student. One day, Haru discovers an Appmon lurking in his smartphone, which reveals itself to be Gatchmon. The two decide to become partners, at which point Gatchmon informs Haru that another artificial intelligence entity called Leviathan has been creating viruses that turn Appmons evil. The pair agree that they must take on the challenge of stopping this villainous force. As the series progresses, Haru's makeshift superhero crew expands to include his best friend Yujin Ozora, rookie idol Eri Karan, famous AppTuber Torajirou Asuka, and prodigy hacker Rei Katsura. Each member of the team partners up with their own Buddy Appmon to help in the fight to defeat Leviathan and restore the balance between their two worlds.

The anime adaptation of the series began airing on all Japanese TXN stations in October 2016. Two manga adaptations were released by Shueisha in November 2016. The first one was illustrated by Naoki Akamine and serialized in V-Jump. The second manga, titled Digimon Universe Appli Monsters: Appmon Gakuen, was illustrated by Katsumi Hirose and serialized in Saikyo Jump.
