Gabumon is the partner to Yamato "Matt" Ishida, one of the eight DigiDestined in the original Digimon Adventure TV anime series. Gabumon's emotional and loyal personality compliments his partner Matt's cooler and more collected nature. Gabumon is often the one who tries to reason with Matt when he is emotionally conflicted, eventually reaching a point where they can communicate without words.

Along with the rest of the DigiDestined's Digiomon, Gabumon was created in order to help balance the good and evil in the Digital World. Gabumon first meets Matt as Tsunomon, Gabumon's In-Training form. When the DigiDestined encounters an evil Kuwagamon, Tsunomon Digivolves into his Rookie form to protect his partner, transforming into Gabumon. Gabumon's Champion Digivolution is Garurumon, a silver-furred Wolf-like Digimon who cann harness the power of ice.

Gabumon is a Reptile Digimon that is always covered by a fur pelt of a Garurumon, which makes it take on a more mammal-like form. Underneath the blue pelt, Gabumon is a yellow-skinned lizard with purple claws. Gabumon comes from the Japanese "Gabu Kashira", which refers to a face-changing puppet used in Kabuki theatre. Gabumon's signature move is Blue Blaster which releases ice-like flames from its mouth.
