Madoka Magica is set in the fictional city of Mitakihara, Japan where middle school student Madoka Kaname and her best friend Sayaka Miki happen upon a small, feline creature named Kyubey. Kyubey offers the girls a contract where they will be granted one wish in exchange for becoming a magical girl and fighting witches. However, a transfer student to Madoka's school, Homura Akemi, attempts to stop Madoka from making the contract with Kyubey, due to her suspicion of his true motives.

While Madoka is deciding whether or not to sign the contract, she meets Mami Tomoe, an older student who has also become a magical girl. Mami takes Madoka and Sayaka along on a witch hunt so they can learn the responsibilities of becoming a magical girl. After Mami is killed in the hunt, the two girls realize that becoming a magical girl is all that it seems, and it an incredibly dangerous job. Madoka later meets Kyoko Sakura, a veteran magical girl whose initial wish inadvertently killed her entire family.

Legendary game and anime writer Gen Urobochi was the lead writer of the Madoka Magica project and was instructed by producer Atsuhiro Iwakami to create a story that subverted common tropes in magical girl anime. In 2011, Newtype magazine announced that Studio Shaft was developing a multi-part film project which compromised of two compilation of the television anime series and one original screenplay also written by Gen Urobochi. The first two films, Beginnings and Eternal, were both released in October 2012, with the third film Rebellion released in 2013 and is considered a sequel to the original anime series.
