About Kantai Collection

Kantai Collection (KanColle) - An online game that combines cute girls and battleships

Kantai Collection (abbreviated as KanColle and known in the Western market as Fleet Collection or Combined Fleet Girls Collection) is a Japanese free-to-play web browser game developed by Kadokawa Games via DMM. com. Just three years after its release in April 2013, a Kantai Collection Android app was added which has the convenient ability to be synchronized with the game's online version. Kantai Collection's gameplay is centered upon building squadrons composed of individual characters represented as cards with different attributes, then sending said squadrons out on missions. The game's characters are moe anthropomorphications of World War II naval warships, known as "fleet girls." With over 4 million registered players, the game has developed into a large media franchise including multiple manga series, light novels, an officially licensed tabletop role-playing game, a PlayStation Vita game, an anime television series along with an animated film sequel to the series.

Although Kantai Collection's number of players has always been on a steady increase since the game's debut, the game's user base has gained momentum in recent years due to positive reviews and countless recommendations from fans. The total number of players broke one million in October 2013. The game then hit three million players in April 2015.

One commonly cited explanation behind the game's success is that players aren't forced to spend money to play. Unlike other popular Japanese online games, the free-to-play nature of Kantai Collection makes in-game purchases optional. It is estimated that on average, Kantai Collection players spend less money on the game compared to other popular Japanese games like Puzzle & Dragons, The Idolmaster: Cinderella Girls and Love Live! School Idol Festival.

Because of its rapidly increasing popularity, the Kantai Collection team decided to temporarily make new registration into a lottery system which has lowered connection errors and ultimately improved gameplay for existing members. The game's reach continues to expand and now over 150 fleet girls are offered, brought to life with a talented cast of actresses that voice about ten characters each. Since its initial release, Kantai Collection has been part of a series of promotional collaborations with various brands such as Family Mart, Pizza Hut, Lawson, Sukiya, Peach Aviation and even the Japan Postal Service. With all of the excitement and hype surrounding Kantai Collection, we have one question to cut through the static: Who's your favorite fleet girl?!
