About Free!

Free! - Strong backstrokes and even stronger friendships

Free uses stunning artwork and animation to chronicle the charming friendship of four male swim club members named Haruka, Makoto, Nagisa and Rin on their journey to adulthood. The first season, Free: Iwatobi Swim Club, is set in the town of Iwatobi, which is based on the real town of Iwami, in Tottori, Japan. Free Iwatobi Swim Club begins shortly after the boys win a swimming tournament relay. The moment is bittersweet because it marks their impending graduation from elementary school, at which time they must part ways. Years later, when they're in high school, the childhood friends reunite again through their shared love of swimming. Another major swim team, Samezuka, is brought into the story at this time. Season two, Free: Eternal Summer, follows the Iwatobi swim team as its members continue to improve their strength, endurance, and speed. The Samezuka team welcomes new members, particularly Rin's childhood best friend, Sosuke Yamazaki. Throughout Free: Eternal Summer, major and minor characters' growth are showcased through captivating personal stories. Both swim teams also face increasingly difficult tournaments, which eventually advance to the national level. As the time to compete draws near, the four develop a close bond while training intensely in order to come out on top.

Free (stylized as Free!) is a Japanese anime television series directed by Hiroko Utsumi and produced by Kyoto Animation with Animation Do. Free's hype began in March 2013, when Animation Do released a television commercial as a follow-up promotion to an image for a new project that was released about a year prior. The commercial quickly went viral among fans, especially users of the blogging site Tumblr, who became instant fans of what they dubbed ""the swimming anime."Despite being just a 30-second commercial, a wide variety of fan works expanding upon the nameless characters from the ad were created, including hypothetical biographies, art and fan fiction, along with online petitions requesting that the studio to turn it into a real series.

Free is a sequel to Koji Oji's light novel, High Speed (stylized as High Speed!), which received an honorable mention in the second Kyoto Animation Award contest in 2011. The anime's first season, Free: Iwatobi Swim Club, aired in Japan in 2013, with the second season, Free: Eternal Summer, airing the following year. Then in 2015, an animated film adaptation of the original novel's second volume was released, called High Speed: Free Starting Days. In 2017, a film trilogy comprised of two compilations of both seasons of the anime series titled Free: Timeless Medley - Kizuna (Bond) and Free: Timeless Medley - Yakusoku (Promise). The third film in the trilogy, Free: Take Your Marks, features a totally new story.
