The story of Bungo Stray Dogs begins when the 18-year-old Atsushi Nakajima is chased out of his orphanage by a mystical tiger only he seems to be able to see. Atsushi spends weeks hungry and homeless before preventing the suicide of an eccentric young man named Osamu Dazai, who was attempting to drown himself in a river. Atsushi soon learns that Dazai is part of a group of detectives that investigate supernatural events known as the Armed Detective Agency and that they have been on the trail of the tiger that had turned Atsushi's life upside down. Atsushi is soon invited to join the firm, where he takes on unusual cases the regular police can't handle alongside a cast of crazy characters.

Many of the characters in Bungo Stray Dogs are named after famous authors and characters from well-known works of literature. Most of the names are taken from Japanese authors from the 19th and 20th century including Atsushi Nakajima, Osamu Dazai, Doppo Kunikida, Junichiro Tanizaki, and Akiko Yosano. Some names of Western authors were also used for characters including the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Lucy Maud Montgomery, John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, and H.P. Lovecraft.

The anime adaptation of the Bungo Stray Dogs manga is produced by BONES, the studio behind some of the most popular and highly-praised anime in recent years creating titles such as My Hero Academia, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Soul Eater, Mob Psycho 100, Ouran School Host Club, and many more. A film version of the series titled Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple premiered in Japan in March 2018 with the original cast and production staff returning to reprise their roles.
