Touken Ranbu (which translates to "wild dance of swords") is a free-to-play online collectible card video game released by DMM and Nitroplus in January 2015. In the game, players assume the role of a Saniwa sage who travels back in time to defeat evil forces that are trying to change the course of history. As a sage, you have the ability to animate famous historical swords, which are anthropomorphized as attractive young men. Your duty is to bring these blades to life, create an army and defeat the enemies! The video game has received two anime adaptations, Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru by Doga Kobo in 2016 and Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu by Ufotable in 2017. Touken Ranbu Pocket, the smartphone app version of the game for Apple iOS and Android, became available in March 2016.

Tsurumaru is a charming and elegant tachi (long sword) with white clothes and hair, accented by golden details and hazel eyes. He is often compared to a crane, because the kanji for crane is part of his name. He was forged by Kuninaga Gojou during the Heian period. Despite his graceful appearance, his personality is witty and wild. Even within the unit, he is very experienced and refined. He playful jokes that his white coat will be stained red in battle.

Tsurumaru's original owner was Sadayasu of the Adachi Clan during the Kamakura period, who was drawn into the political rivalry between his clan of samurai and the regent of Shogunate, Hojo Sadatoki (which resulted in the Shimotsuki Incident). Because of the Shimotsuki Incident, his owner was killed by 14-year-old Hojo Sadatoki. Tsurumaru was supposed to sleep in his owner's grave, but Sadatoki wanted the beautiful sword for himself and actually dug Tsurumaru out of Sadayasu's grave to take him.
